# Three Ways SME Exporters Can Handle L/C Documents, and Why Two of Them Cost Too Much

> A senior L/C specialist costs $110k to $150k in the US. Outsourcing trades cost for control and timing risk. For a few L/Cs a month there is a third way.

A senior export documentation specialist with letter-of-credit expertise costs $110,000 to $150,000 all-in in the US, EUR 70,000 to EUR 105,000 in the EU, and $21,000 to $52,000 in India.

If you are an SME presenting three to ten L/Cs a month, you cannot justify that. You pay for someone whose core competency is not needed most of the week, and you carry the risk that they leave and take the corridor knowledge with them.

## Option one: hire internally

The specialist is available, onshore, under your control, and knows your buyers. The problem is utilisation. Three to ten presentations a month is a few days of examination work stretched across a full salary. The rest of the week the specialist is doing something else, and the L/C expertise you are paying for sits idle.

## Option two: outsource to a remote document company

Smaller exporters can outsource to a document company running remote staff. That fixes cost but creates two other problems.

- **Control and data.** Your documents are managed by infrastructure you do not control, in a jurisdiction whose data rules may not comply with your buyers' terms.
- **Timing.** A 12-hour time difference means you cannot expect immediate turnaround, so a document that needs a correction on presentation day can miss the L/C deadline. For an instrument governed by dates, that is not a minor inconvenience.

## Option three: increase the throughput of the people you already have

Validator increases the throughput of whoever already prepares your L/Cs, onshore, under your control, with a five-minute turnaround. The person who handles export paperwork today keeps handling it. Validator reads the credit, drafts the documents from it, checks the set, and shows the reasoning behind each finding, so a competent generalist can present at a specialist's standard. It pays off at two presentations a month, not thirty.

## Why volume is the deciding variable

The economics of L/C documentation turn almost entirely on how many presentations a business makes. At thirty or more a month, a dedicated specialist is busy and worth the salary. At three to ten, the same specialist is underused, and the business is paying a fixed cost for expertise it needs a few days a month. Outsourcing converts that fixed cost to a variable one, but exports the control and the deadline risk along with the work. A tool priced per presentation is the only option whose cost actually tracks the volume, which is why it pays off at two presentations a month rather than thirty. That is not a marketing claim; it is the arithmetic of a fixed salary against a per-unit price.

| | Hire internally | Outsource remotely | Validator |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cost | $110k to $150k (US); EUR 70k to 105k (EU) | Lower | Pays off from 2 presentations a month |
| Who does the work | A dedicated specialist | Remote staff | Whoever already prepares your L/Cs |
| Location and control | Onshore, yours | Offshore, theirs | Onshore, yours |
| Turnaround | Same day | Next business day, 12-hour offset | 5 minutes |
| Main risk | High fixed cost, key-person dependency | Data jurisdiction, missed deadlines | None specific to volume |

## Key takeaways

- At SME volumes a dedicated specialist is mostly idle capacity at full salary.
- Remote outsourcing trades cost for control, data-jurisdiction and deadline risk.
- Tooling the person you already have keeps documents onshore and under your control, and pays back at two presentations a month.
